ISO is the camera setting that controls a sensor’s sensitivity to light. Raising ISO brightens an image without requiring more actual light in the scene, making it one of the most useful tools a photographer has for working in dim conditions, like an evening reception or a dark ceremony venue. That flexibility comes with a tradeoff, though. Higher ISO settings introduce more visual noise, a grainy, speckled texture that becomes more visible as ISO increases, particularly in shadow areas of an image.

ISO is one of the three settings that make up the exposure triangle, alongside aperture and shutter speed, and it’s often the setting a photographer adjusts last, after aperture and shutter speed have already been chosen based on depth of field and motion needs.

How ISO Fits Into the Exposure Triangle

Aperture and shutter speed both affect exposure, but they’re also tied to other creative decisions, aperture affects depth of field, and shutter speed affects motion blur. ISO is different. It doesn’t have the same creative side effect, which is part of why photographers often treat it as the setting they raise or lower to compensate once aperture and shutter speed have already been set for other reasons.

For example, a photographer might choose a fast shutter speed to freeze a first dance and a moderate aperture to keep both partners in focus, then raise ISO as needed to achieve a properly exposed image once those other two settings are locked in for that specific shot.

Why ISO Matters So Much in Wedding Photography

A wedding day moves through drastically different lighting conditions, bright outdoor ceremony light, a dim getting ready room, and a low-lit evening reception, sometimes all within just a few hours. Because ISO can be adjusted instantly between shots, unlike physically changing a lens or waiting for better ambient light, it gives a photographer the flexibility to keep shooting confidently as lighting conditions shift throughout the day, rather than needing to pause or compromise on other settings.

This flexibility becomes especially important once the sun sets and ambient light disappears almost entirely. In these situations, a photographer often has to choose between raising ISO significantly, introducing flash photography, or some combination of both, depending on how much grain is acceptable for the specific shot being captured.

Understanding ISO Noise and Image Quality

Modern cameras have improved significantly in how cleanly they handle high ISO settings, but noise still increases as ISO rises, particularly in darker areas of an image. A small amount of grain is often not distracting and can even contribute to a natural, film-inspired style aesthetic, but excessive noise can degrade fine detail and reduce overall image sharpness, especially when an image is enlarged or cropped closely.

This is part of why experienced photographers try to balance ISO carefully, raising it enough to maintain a usable shutter speed and aperture, without pushing it so high that noise becomes a significant distraction in the final image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a high ISO setting always a bad thing? Not necessarily. A higher ISO is often a reasonable tradeoff in low-light situations where the alternative would be a blurry or improperly exposed photo. Modern cameras handle moderately high ISO settings quite well, and some visible grain is often preferable to a photo that’s too dark or blurred from motion.

Can grain from a high ISO be fixed in editing? To some extent. Noise reduction tools in editing software can soften grain, though heavy noise reduction can also soften fine detail throughout the image, so there’s usually a limit to how much can be corrected without affecting overall sharpness.

Why do professional photographers use different cameras if ISO is just a setting? Camera sensors vary significantly in how well they handle high ISO settings before noise becomes distracting. This is one of the reasons professional-grade cameras, often used specifically for wedding photography, tend to perform better in low light than lower-end camera bodies or smartphones.
